Rest in Peace Sweet Max- Coping with the Loss of a Pet & Oral Canine Cancer- Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

You may remember sweet Max from a previous blog post. In early April 2010, Kate pulled his cheek back and saw a mass growing on his gums. She immediately made an appointment at the vet and he later underwent surgery to remove the mass. Unfortunately, the pathology report revealed a high grade malignant melanoma. They were referred to a veterinary oncologist and Max has been given regular shots of a canine melanoma vaccine. The vaccine involves a series of 4 shots two weeks apart, and then one every 6 months.

Max courageously fought a tough battle and he even had part of his upper jaw and teeth removed as well. His life was extended because of his loving family who would do anything to help save him. Rest in Peace Sweet Snoopy- Coping with the Loss of a Pet & Congestive Heart Failure- Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

I was recently contacted to photograph Snoopy, an adorable little poodle who was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. We were hopeful that new medication would extend his life, but he crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully in his mommy's arms yesterday.

According to www.pets.webmd.com, congestive heart failure is the inability of the heart to provide adequate circulation to meet the body’s needs. It is the end result of a weakened heart muscle. The health of the liver, kidneys, lungs, and other organs is impaired by the circulatory failure, resulting in a problem involving multiple organs. I want to thank the amazing support group of friends I have on my Facebook business page. They are so sympathetic when they learn of a pets passing. And this was a poem that one of my friends posted. I felt it was very well written and hopefully will provide some comfort to those who have lost their beloved pet.

A Message Home from the Rainbow Bridge

I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

Bungee Burrow Beds - A Pet Bed System - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

During the past few years in my journey as a pet photographer, I have been blessed to meet some amazing people in the pet community - both locally in Kansas City and even internationally. I recently learned of Bungee Burrow beds by Renee Rose and was intrigued to have Remington try one of these out for himself. She sent me a large, custom handmade bed just for Remington. I had to laugh because as soon as I laid it out on the living room floor upon arrival, he immediately planted himself on the bed and didn't move for hours. It is apparently Remington-approved! Remington's best friend Murphy the Poodle/Bichon and often mistaken for a stuffed animal tried out his own bed too. Bungee Burrow Beds - A Pet Bed System

This unique bedding system is designed to provide your pet with comfort and security, while allowing for repeated machine washing, providing a hypo-allergenic product for cleanliness and comfort.

The bed comes with a blanket w/bungee bands, that does attach to the Bed. It allows your pet to burrow under the blanket, stand up and change positions under the blanket. While the blanket stays in place. Your pet will be able to enter and exit from all four sides of the bed and the blanket will lie down on top of bed. Your pet can lie on top of blanket, if not wanting to burrow under the blanket.

The design of this bed incorporates a Flat poly-fill, that is sewn into the four sides of fabric. This allows the poly-fill to stay in place, without tangles and losing its shape in the washing machine or dryer. BB-Beds bungee burrow beds are Patent Pending. Blanket is made out of "Anti-Pill" Fleece -- Anti-pill fleece is the highest quality of fleece. (it will not have little pills of ball on fleece)

Bed is made out of high quality, durable cotton/drapery "decorative" fabric. All materials are bought in the USA. I've designed this bed around a" Bed" Pillow - Queen size. King bed pillow would be great for two little dogs or one medium size dog. (Pillow does not come with bed)

BB-Beds are designed for smaller... dogs and cats. I have made a Travel (pillow) size for possibly a ferret or other small critters. You no longer greet me, As I walk through the door.

I posted this photo below on my Facebook page when I learned Mercy had passed, along with this prayer: "Dear Lord: It's me Mercy. Please help my Mommy and furry siblings heal during this sorrowful time. I know I will see them again someday. Let them know that I am having fun playing across the rainbow bridge though. ♥ RIP sweet Mercy."

I learned that her Mommy said she had prayed earlier for a sign from Mercy and that I may have been the messenger with the above posting. Run free over the rainbow bridge with all of our beloved pets who have crossed. We will see you again and meet you there someday.

It never gets any easier when I hear one of my client's pets have passed. I met and photographed Maddie at her favorite place, Riverfront Park earlier this Summer. It was special for her Mommy to have her photographed there and before they moved away to Georgia. It was an honor to be chosen to photograph Maddie and capture her beautiful spirit. She went along with all of my crazy antics and was rewarded with squeeze cheese from her Mommy when she cooperated. Maddie crossed the rainbow bridge over the weekend. She had been living with Cancer but had managed to stay strong for around 2 years. She lost her battle and is now waiting on the other side for a time when we are all reunited with our pets.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and to vigour. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, someone who was left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent; her eager body begins to quiver. Suddenly, she breaks from the group, flying over the green grass, faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

Happy Tails: Overcoming the Puppy Mill Life and Finding her Forever Family - The Power of a Photograph - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

Click here to read my original post about the ugly truths of Puppy Mills. Puppy mill rescues can initially be absolutely terrified of everything. This is because during their life in a puppy mill, they were kept in horrid conditions, locked in cages 24/7 and were only used for the purpose of constant breeding. They stand and sit in their own urine and defecation. They do not know or understand love or the human touch. Therefore if they are lucky enough to be rescued out of these conditions, they literally are petrified of experiencing a normal life. Puppy mill rescues need an adopter with patience and love and the willingness to help them learn they can trust a human again. I heard about Mimi and her story in October and was determined to photograph her. I needed to show others her true soul that was being overlooked due to her apprehensive personality, resulting from a puppy mill life.

I first spotted this photo of Mimi on my friend Shannon's Facebook page a few months ago.

I had a cat for 15 years who died in 2006 named Misha, who we called "Mimi" for short, so I kind of felt it was a sign. My husband and I decided we were ready for another dog and I've always loved tiny black poodles, so I reached out to Shannon and she surprised me by saying that she had secretly been hoping that we'd adopt her! Shannon warned me that Mimi had come from a puppy mill and was very traumatized and that she would need a lot of work, but I wasn't deterred. I just felt right away like she was meant to be our dog. Shannon and I discussed it for a while and mutually decided to go for it. I made my plane reservations and flew from New Jersey to Kansas on November 5 to pick her up!

Mimi is not like other dogs. She doesn't know how to walk on a leash yet, and she still cowers or runs when you try to pick her up, but she's already made a lot of progress in the month that we've had her. She sits on our laps contentedly, sleeps in bed with us, and follows her big sister Lemon around and does everything she does. She comes to the door with Lemon to greet us when we come home and we even caught her standing up, looking out the dining room window when we pulled into the driveway yesterday, just like Lemon does! I love her so much! I feel like the luckiest person on earth to be given the chance to have her in my life .

Belle the sweet chocolate Lab passed away and crossed the rainbow bridge earlier this week. It hits me very hard every time I learn of a client's pet who passes. Because I know the pain of losing a pet, I wince when I hear the news. It's like a punch in the stomach where all the wind is knocked out of you and you can't find the right words to say you are sorry. Because there really are no words to comfort someone when they have lost a pet. Everyone needs their own time to process and grieve their loss because pets are not "just a pet". They are family. And their loss should be treated as such.

Your Pets In Heaven

To have loved and then said farewell, is better than to have never loved at all. For all of the times that you have stooped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treat and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you. For the care that you gave to me so unselfishly. For all of these things I am grateful and thankful.

I ask that you not grieve for the loss, but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each others lives. My life was fuller because you were there, not as a master/owner, but as my FRIEND.

Today I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among the flowers and the Sun shines gently down upon all of God's creatures. I can run, jump, play and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching joints and no regrets and no aging.

We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know that togetherness is forever. You live in our hearts as we do in yours. Companions such as you are so rare and unique. Don't hold the love that you have within yourself. Give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are.

These photos were taken at Belle's beautiful home where she had full access to a huge pond that most dogs would only dream of and played gleefully with her siblings Jake and Harley. Rest in Peace sweet Belle. You will be greatly missed by all you have touched.

As many of you know already, I volunteer regularly by photographing the dogs up for adoption at KC PAWS in Kansas City. A photo can make the difference for an animal waiting for their forever family in a rescue or shelter environment. I am also partnered with the lovely Kyndra Jade of www.petliks.com, who generously donates her adorable bowtie and flower collar accessories to any adoptable dog that I photograph. It's just an extra special touch that are giving these adoptables even more exposure to help meet their forever family.

KC PAWS (The Protective Animal Welfare Society) was formed in 2007 with the determination of working with animals in need. They specialize in working with animals who are the victims of abuse. They work in connection with local City and State agency’s to help investigate and report cases of cruelty and neglect as well as providing education and resources to the community on how to properly care for their animals.

Rest in Peace Sweet Sadie - Losing Your Pet to Canine Cancer - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

During these two years as a pet photographer, I have already photographed many dogs who were terminally ill and passed. So, my heart sank when I received an email from Sadie's mommy a couple weeks ago, explaining that her furry baby was recently diagnosed with Cancer (I HATE that word!) and had a huge mass in her stomach. She was scheduled to have her photos taken during my special mini session weekend, but I knew I needed to move the appointment sooner.... just in case. I photographed sweet Sadie on the Tuesday before her weekend session was originally scheduled. Then I received dreadful news the very next day, Sadie had passed. I immediately was overcome with sadness and tears. If I would have waited one more day... it would have been too late to capture her. As tragic as this was, I believe that the Lord leads us through life and gives us the intuition to help others when we can. I am confident it was no accident that I was led to move up Sadie's photo session. I also think Sadie sensed she was being called over the rainbow bridge and wanted to hold on until her memories were preserved for a lifetime and to give her family some comfort and peace during such a difficult time.

What is Cancer?
Dog cancer, like human cancer, is the uncontrolled growth of cells on or within the body. Although there are many types of cancer, they all start because of out-of-control growth of abnormal cells. Normal body cells grow, divide, and die in an orderly fashion. During the early years of a dog's life, normal cells divide more rapidly until the dog becomes an adult. After that, cells in most parts of the body divide only to replace worn-out or dying cells and to repair injuries. Because cancer cells continue to grow and divide, they are different from normal cells. Instead of dying, they outlive normal cells and continue to form new abnormal cells.

Cancerous tumors can spread to other parts of the body where they begin to grow and replace normal tissue. This process is called metastasis. For example, breast cancer that spreads to the liver is still called breast cancer, not liver cancer. Regardless of where a cancer may spread, however, it is always named for the place it began.Not all tumors are cancerous. Benign (noncancerous) tumors do not spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body and, with very rare exceptions, are not life threatening.Different types of cancer can behave very differently. For example, bone cancer and breast cancer are very different diseases. They grow at different rates and respond to different treatments. That is why dogs with cancer need treatment that is aimed at their particular kind of cancer. Cancer rates increase in dogs with age. It is the leading cause of death in dogs over 10 years.

Diagnosis
If cancer is suspected in your dog, a veterinarian may order x-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds. A biopsy (the removal of a piece of tissue) is frequently performed for confirmation that cancer exists and to determine the level of severity from benign to aggressively malignant (called grading).

Prevention
We do not know how dogs get cancer most of the time. There are many types of cancer and many possible causes of cancer (chemicals in our environment, sun exposure, assorted viruses and infections). There are important genetic factors as well. Feeding your dog a healthy diet and keeping them away from known carcinogens will help. Spaying or neutering your dog will also reduce their risk for developing certain cancers.

Treatment
Each diagnosis of cancer requires individual care and treatment planning. Conventional treatment may include a combination of treatment therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, cryosurgery (freezing), hyperthermia (heating) or immunotherapy.Complementary and alternative veterinary medicine (CAVM) therapies include acupuncture, behavior modification, homeopathy, herbal medicine, mega-nutrient augmentation therapy, nutritional therapy and chiropractic therapy. Once diagnosed, your veterinarian will discuss the best treatment option(s) for your dog. In some instances, your veterinarian may refer you to a board-certified oncologist (cancer specialist) depending upon the recommended course of treatment. It never hurts to get a second opinion and to research clinical trials for which you dog may be eligible.

Prognosis
Treatment success depends upon the type and extent of the cancer, as well as the aggressiveness of therapy. Some cancers can be cured and almost all patients can be helped to some degree.Another critical point is to understand exactly what is meant when data on efficacy of treatment is presented. Useful terms include:Median - this is used in the context of survival, a median survival of three months means that 50% of the animals are alive at three months, but 50% have died. It does not give you any information of the range of survival of individuals from within the group. For example, individual animals may have survived for only a day to several years. A median survival is very useful to allow comparison between different types of treatment.Survival means just that: how long an animal stayed alive, usually from time of diagnosis, but it could also mean from time of treatment, or from time the owner first noticed signs of a problem. It does not give you any information on what the animal's quality of life was during that time.Progression free survival is the time the animal survived without progression of the clinical signs. This gives you a better idea of the quality of life.

Common Cancer Terms
Cancer: any malignant, cellular tumor; cancers are divided into two broad categories of carcinoma and sarcomas.

Neoplasm: an abnormal new growth of tissue in animals or plants; a tumorTumor: 1.) a swelling; a cardinal sign of inflammation. 2.) neoplasm: a new growth of tissue in which cell multiplication is uncontrolled and progressive.

Benign tumor: one lacking the properties of invasion and metastasis and showing a lesser degree of abnormal cellularity than do malignant tumors. These are usually surrounded by a fibrous capsule.

Malignant tumor: has the properties of invasion and metastasis and displays cells with widely varying characteristicsCarcinoma: a malignant growth made up of epithelial cells tending to infiltrate surrounding tissues and gives rise to metastases.

Sarcoma: a malignant tumor originating from connective tissue or blood or lymphatic tissues.

Metastasize: spread throughout the body, of cancer cells

Growth: can refer to any kind of an abnormal increase in size of tissue

Lump: can be a growth or fluid filled cyst or any structure raising above the normal surface of a tissue plane.

Gus the Pomeranian was rescued from an abusive home by his Mommy Sarah. She spoiled him and showed him what true love should feel like. He was aging and had some medical issues and crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully in his sleep yesterday. I still remember falling in love with his sweet little face from the moment I met him. Sometimes during a photo shoot, I can feel a pet's soul radiate very strongly and with Gus, I could especially sense this with intensity. He was literally smiling almost every second during his photo shoot. Just like this.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

Romeo the Schnauzer - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

OK, Remington, don't be jealous. I photographed another Schnauzer last weekend.

*Gasp*. But you always do know when I've been off photographing another dog because when I arrive home and you come running to greet me, you immediately stop and sniff me in confusion. You give me that perplexed and serious Schnauzer look that says.. HEY. I thought I was the only dog you pulled out your big camera thing for and gave special treats, right? Sorry, my best furry friend... there are others, but you will always be Number 1 in my book!

Meet Romeo, an adorable Schnauzer who modeled quite lovely for me in Antioch Park on a gorgeous Fall day. I will say that the magic phrase for him was "Do you want to go for a walk?" and he would come galloping toward me in pure excitement as his response. Good thing my camera is fast! Sometimes I have to... fib (OK.. lie) .... to get a dog's attention or perk up their ears. This may mean asking them various phrases in which the answer is not going to happen at that moment.. such as going for a walk. Romeo, in typical Schnauzer form, gave me a little Schnauzer-tude (aroooooooo-roooo) when I did not hold up to my random phrases. I couldn't help but laugh because my Remington does the same thing. Gotta love those Schnauzers! Much love to Veronica and her boy Romeo!

All About Mimi - Puppy Mill Rescue & Up for Adoption - Liks LLC & HeARTS Speak - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

You may remember my recent post about the ugly truth of puppy mills. Puppy mill rescues can initially be absolutely terrified of everything. This is because during their life in a puppy mill, they were kept in horrid conditions, locked in cages 24/7 and were only used for the purpose of constant breeding. They stand and sit in their own urine and defecation. They do not know or understand love or the human touch. Therefore if they are lucky enough to be rescued out of these conditions, they literally are petrified of experiencing a normal life. Puppy mill rescues need an adopter with patience and love and who is willing to take the time to help them learn they can trust a human again. It is an amazing feeling to watch the transformation of a puppy mill rescue and know they will be forever grateful for your companionship.

Mimi is an ADORABLE little black poodle I met and photographed yesterday. However, she is a puppy mill rescue and was literally frozen in fear when I first met her. She needs time and understanding to help her learn what a normal life should consist of.

Bo, Winner of the Pet Photo Contest and Sisters Zoey & Belle - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

I occasionally have pet photo contests on my Facebook page as an incentive and thank you to my loyal fans. I would not be where I am today without the support and encouragement from others, especially those who follow me on Facebook. I remember starting my page in 2009 and hoping to have 100 fans. My work was substandard and I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. I self taught myself everything and learned along the way by following fellow photographers who I only dreamed about coming close to their caliber of work. Sometimes I look back at my older photos when I first began and shake my head. Really..... I called that professional pet photography???? What was I doing??? Well I am here to tell you that with practice, determination, love, patience and support from others, anything is possible. I can't wait to continue learning and growing along this journey. And I have all of you to thank for it, now having over 3,800 fans and 13,000 current monthly active users on my Facebook page.

Bo was the most recent winner of my pet photo contest. Fans on my page posted photos of their beloved furry children and asked their friends to join my page and vote on their photo by "liking" it. The photo with the most "likes" by the end of the voting period won a free pet session and 20 digital images! Here is the humble winner Bo, a senior Basset, who made me smile with those classic Basset expressions.

Bo's Mommy had 2 other pets she brought along to have their own sessions as well. This sweet girl is Belle.

Meet Bonnie, Daisy & Violet - A Nelson Art Museum Pet Photo Shoot - Ashley Corbello Pet Paintings & Portraits - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

Remember my new logo design and this super cool painting of Remington? They were both designed by the talented graphic designer and artist, Ashley Corbello of Ashley Corbello Pet Paintings & Portraits. I recently had the pleasure of photographing her three adorable dogs at a fun photo shoot at the Nelson Art Museum in Kansas City.

It is not an easy task to engage three dogs at once, instruct them to stay AND look at me at the same time. This photo turned out cute even though they all were not looking directly at the camera. Bonnie is focused on a squirrel which she eventually bolted after and Violet had the classic beagle-nose-to-the-grindstone going on, but it works because it fits their personalities.

Daisy has a unique story. This sweet girl was spotted on the side of the road and was about to be shot or hurt. Ashley's boyfriend happened to notice what was going on as he was driving by. He intervened and whisked this lucky girl off to safety. It was speculated that she may have been a substandard hunting dog and was going to be "disposed" of. As fate unveiled, it was not her time to cross the rainbow bridge.

Violet is quite the character. How can you not love those huge ears or "wings" as Ashley calls them.

And here is Bonnie, the sweet little Chihuahua who has a love of squirrels as it turns out!

They usually say a picture is worth a 1,000 words. But what if that picture was actually worth a life? Could it be possible that one simple picture can actually have such an impact that it could save a life?
Most of us don’t think about how much pictures change our perception. Take for example marketing. Next time you look through a glamour magazine, look at the makeup ads. Do you think that if the pictures of the models weren’t taken with such care, the company would actually sell as much as they do? Probably not. Good photographs are what drive sales.

The same concept is now being used to market rescues. Shelters all over are taking notice of just how much of an impact a good photo can have. Typically, shelters invest all their money into the health of the animal, so their digital cameras are in no way top notch. The bad pictures weren’t exactly reeling in the adoptive parents.
Several professional photographers have sat up and taken notice. There has been a spike of selfless, generous photographers that have lent their services to animal shelters in hopes of higher adoption rates. And guess what? It’s worked!

A Dallas, Texas photographer, Teresa Berg, has actually raised shelter adoption rates by 100%! Her efforts as a volunteer photographer took the shelter’s adoption rates through the roof. Teresa started working directly with a dachshund rescue group and every dog she photographed was adopted in record time.

Dressing the dogs up in pearls and bows can make the difference between life and death. By seeing good photos of the animals, people can actually picture them in their home. Their sweet personalities and loving natures can be seen without having to meet the pooch in person. Switching the marketing from photos of dogs behind bars to dogs with smiling faces can make all the difference in the world.

Jennifer Hague, another volunteer photographer in Kansas City, has donated her services to help save our furry friends. Jennifer is persistent, shooting in temperatures as high as 100+ or as cold as negative 10. Nothing seems to stop this devoted volunteer to bring a voice to the abandoned. Devoting her time to photograph dogs at KC P.A.W.S.,

Jennifer finds great comfort in the fact that she can capture the innocent spirit, unconditional love, and unique personalities of dogs that would otherwise go unnoticed. By selflessly donating some of her time and camera skills, she has been able to save countless lives.

If every professional photographer found it in their heart to take up donating their camera time to just one shelter, think about all the dogs that could be saved! By simply switching the lighting and throwing on an accessory or two, pets could be more adoptable. A photo is worth more than a 1,000 words, it can be worth a life.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 8-12 million animals enter shelters nationwide every year and around 5-9 million are euthanized. Five out of ten dogs in shelters and seven out of ten cats are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them. Some of you may think these stats are too overwhelming and even if you helped promote adoption or volunteered that it would never make a dent in the shocking numbers of pet overpopulation. But, even if you save the life of just one animal, isn't it worth all your efforts? I say, yes. We can all make a difference in the lives of homeless animals... but we have to actually put forth an effort and not just talk about it with pity in our hearts.

I volunteer regularly by photographing the dogs up for adoption at KC PAWS in Kansas City. KC PAWS also works with local rescues and helps board some of their dogs, so they have room to rescue more homeless pets. This round of photos includes dogs from KC PAWS, Last Chance Black Dog Rescue, Unleashed Pet Rescue, Mastiff Hope and Mid America Bully Breed Rescue. Rest in Peace Sweet Cash - Coping with Canine Kidney Disease - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

It never gets any easier when I hear that a client's dog has passed away that I have photographed. I just learned that sweet Cash passed away of kidney failure last Spring. I will always remember what a happy dog he was. His family rescued him and he was very attached to them, especially his Mommy. He was cautious of strangers, but I will never forget how pleasantly surprised his Mommy was when Cash warmed up to me so quickly.

According to www.petmd.com, Acute uremia is a sudden-onset condition that is characterized by high levels of urea, protein products, and amino acids in the blood. This condition usually follows sudden kidney injuries, or occurs when the urinary tubes that connect the kidney to the bladder (ureters) are obstructed. As a result, the outflow of urine is obstructed, creating an imbalance in fluid regulation and leading to a buildup of potential toxins in the body. To have loved and then said farewell, is better than to have never loved at all. For all of the times that you have stooped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treat and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you. For the care that you gave to me so unselfishly. For all of these things I am grateful and thankful.

I ask that you not grieve for the loss, but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each others lives. My life was fuller because you were there, not as a master/owner, but as my FRIEND.

Today I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among the flowers and the Sun shines gently down upon all of God's creatures. I can run, jump, play and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching joints and no regrets and no aging.

We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know that togetherness is forever. You live in our hearts as we do in yours. Companions such as you are so rare and unique. Don't hold the love that you have within yourself. Give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are.

Grandpa Griff the Brussels Griffon - The Ugly Truth about Puppy Mills - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

Grandpa Griff is a Brussels Griffon. One of the most adorable breeds in my opinion. Just try to look at his face without smiling... I dare you!
Bet you wouldn't realize that Grandpa Griff lived a horrid life of constant breeding in a puppy mill until it was determined that he was too old and not "useful" anymore. He was rescued from the puppy mill and now lives a spoiled life with his Mommy Shannon and her two other furry babies. Grandpa (age 10) was one of the lucky ones that escaped the puppy mill with his life.

According to an article on www.ehow.com, puppy mills are foul-smelling factories that produce puppies by the thousands with no care to their health, well-being or accuracy in marking registration papers. The dogs stay in wire cages, often stacked on top of each other, all of their lives. The cages and the animals are never cleaned. They never see a vet. They are bred indiscriminately, leading to very sickly animals. Common health concerns in these dogs include: Canine Parvovirus, Hip Dysplasia, Neurological Problems, Eye Problems and Blood Disorders.

Did you know that if you support Petland and other pet stores, there is a good chance those pets were bought from substandard puppy mills and they may have some of the health issues listed above. By supporting and buying these pets, you are consequently supporting the viscous puppy mill cycle. This is why I dedicate my life to photographing and advocating for dogs in a shelter and rescue environment who desperately need homes before they are euthanized due to space and because of startling pet overpopulation.

Yes, you heard that right -- which means your local rescue can attend our events (without any booth fees) and adopters who apply for a pet appearing at the event will not incur any adoption fee! Even if your rescue requires home visits and does not technically allow "onsite" adoptions, Steve will still cover the adoption expenses if someone applies for a pet appearing at the event and is approved.

Unique Senior Class Portraits - Branding Yourself as a Photographer - Kansas City Dog, Pet & Portrait Photography

Some great advice I once received was that as a photographer, you need to find a niche, learn your style and genre and stick with it. The most successful photographers are those who stay with a particular specialty. "General" photographers can blend in with the rest of the competition and do not stand apart. So, I decided that I was going to brand myself as a photo restoration artist and a pet photographer only. While I do offer wedding photography, I no longer promote this and do not include in my branding, because I want to be known as primarily a pet photographer. When I receive requests to photograph babies, children or even senior class portraits, my answer is that I will only photograph them if a pet is involved. It can be hard to turn away business, but I have to remember that I am branding myself as a unique pet photographer in the Kansas City area and ultimately I will have much more success by staying true to my style.

With that said, I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful senior student, Micalla, this past weekend at the Country Club Plaza. She brought along her furry pal Charlie who was rescued by the lovely Kelly Lange (animal rescue super star in the Kansas City community).

The Pet Connection, Inc. is a no-kill, nonprofit, animal shelter located in the Kansas City Metro Area. It is their intention to form a no-kill coalition for companion animals within the community by educating the public, providing spay/neuter and other responsible pet owner services and to find homes for unwanted and abandoned animals. They serve as an adoption center for many groups and individuals who need to find homes for abandoned animals. They believe that each group needs to work together to accomplish this task. Since they are a no-kill shelter and have limited space, they can’t take in all animals that need help, even though they would want to. Instead, they keep a waiting list to assist people to the best of their ability. On occasion, individuals will serve as fosters for their own pets until they are re-homed.

Harley, Jake & Belle - Labradors & Jack Russell Terrier - Photographing Multiple Dogs - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

Meet Harley, Jake and Belle! Harley and Belle are the beautiful water-loving labs and Jake is the Jack Russell Terrier and resident rodent & frog police. I was excited to visit their property on 8 acres in Platte City, complete with a large pond right in their backyard. I do many on-location shoots in various places around Kansas City, but dogs are usually most comfortable when they are photographed at their own home in their true element.

Photographing multiple dogs at once can pose a challenge, but with persistence, patience and being downright stubborn, it is possible! "Sit... Stay.... Staaaay......." as I back away slowly and situate my camera. As soon as I back away, that's often when dogs decide to move and come to me anyways. Luckily I have an extreme amount of patience with furry creatures and will repeat the process until I am satisfied. Some people jokingly ask me if it takes 4 hours to do a shoot like this and my answer is no... still only takes me around an hour with multiple dog situations, however I would stay as long as necessary to ensure I have a variety of great shots. I always feel very confident and in control when I am photographing dogs... but cats are not quite as predictable and are much more independent. While I can usually manage to wrangle and instruct dogs to do exactly what I hope for, cats tend to do as they please. And I have learned that treats, crazy noises and toys aren't going to entice them any quicker. During my recent feline photo shoot, I tried yummy kitty treats, dangling their favorite toys and even tuna, but in the end I just had to be patient and capture them in their element without being pushy. I met a lovely woman last winter, along with her kind boyfriend and adorable furry kids. She had been following my work for months on Facebook and lives 3 1/2 hours (one way) from me, but was willing to drive that far so I could capture her precious little Thurmie & Brian. She scheduled a shoot during the Winter, which is normally fine for some cute snow shots. Little did we know it was going to be a brutal negative 10 degree wind chill on the day of her shoot. But I am not one to give up easily and can get through a photo shoot no matter what you throw at me. So we fought the cold, managed to avoid hypothermia and somehow I captured some memorable images for her even in that bitter cold. This woman, Devri, is much more than a client now, but is my friend, my #1 fan and constant cheerleader, motivator and a source of powerful encouragement in my journey as a pet photographer.

So let's just say I was beyond excited to photograph her family for the second time this summer. She booked in August, thinking surely there could be no issues with weather in that month! But, we had to fight mother nature once again. It started out an extremely dreary and rainy day... but Devri had already driven up here the night before.. so there was no turning back now! Rain or shine, this photo shoot was happening. I am very adamant that all my photos be taken outside with natural light only, but I needed a Plan B and decided to use my guest bedroom as a fun opportunity to try out an idea I had been cooking up.

And then, what do you know... the rain cleared up and even though the grass and bench seating in my backyard was soggy, we still made it work! Don't mess with me, mother nature. I will win when it comes to pet photo shoots!!

One of the biggest concerns I hear from potential clients is they fear their pet will not cooperate during a photo session. Some even think their pets could never have a photo session with a stranger because of their personality. Let me tell you, when I say I have seen it all, I mean it! And it works out fabulously every time, regardless of the dog's breed, personality, age, health or temperament. As an experienced animal rescue volunteer, I have absolutely interacted with a variety of shy, terrified and extremely energetic pets, but they all allowed me to photograph them and were comfortable with me. Luckily for my clients, I have an extreme amount of patience with animals. I learned rather quickly that my love for furry creatures overpowers everything and I never feel an ounce of frustration towards the pets I photograph, no matter what obstacles present themselves.

Dogs LOVE to explore, especially when they are in a new and exciting place. (i.e., photo shoot spots) While your pet may appear they aren't cooperating to the best of their ability, I promise you they are! I can't count how many times a client has asked me if their dog was the worst behaved dog that I have ever photographed. I just smile and assure them they will be pleased when they see what my lens does. Sweet Maddie was photographed this weekend. She was diagnosed with Mast Cell Cancer and has been holding strong for a few years, but her Mommy wanted to have her photographed before they moved away from the Kansas City area. She was such a joy to meet and interact with. We photographed her at their favorite spot.... the Berkley Riverfront Park in the downtown/City Market area.

According to the ASPCA, approximately 8-12 million animals enter shelters nationwide every year & around 5-9 million are euthanized. Five out of ten dogs in shelters and seven out of ten cats are destroyed simply because there is no one to adopt them. Some of you may think these stats are too overwhelming and even if you helped promote adoption or volunteered that it would never make a dent in the shocking numbers of pet overpopulation. But, even if you save the life of just one animal, isn't it worth all your efforts? I say, yes. We can all make a difference in the lives of homeless animals... but we have to actually put forth an effort and not just talk about it with pity in our hearts.

I volunteer regularly by photographing the dogs up for adoption at KC PAWS in Kansas City. A photo can make the difference for an animal waiting for their forever family in a rescue or shelter environment. I am also partnered with the lovely Kyndra Jade of www.petliks.com, who generously donates her adorable bowtie and flower collar accessories to any adoptable dog that I photograph. It's just an extra special touch that are giving these adoptables even more exposure to help meet their forever family.

KC PAWS (The Protective Animal Welfare Society) was formed in 2007 with the determination of working with animals in need. They specialize in working with animals who are the victims of abuse. They work in connection with local City and State agency’s to help investigate and report cases of cruelty and neglect as well as providing education and resources to the community on how to properly care for their animals.

I find myself laughing out loud occasionally when I am processing photos from my pet sessions. There is usually a priceless expression where I find myself imagining what they must have been thinking at that very moment. I may be silly, but I also like to "talk" for pets during photo sessions. It seems to break the ice and comes naturally to me. So if you book a session with me, you may be in for quite an entertaining time. HELP Humane is a 501(c)(3) corporation committed to ending the suffering and killing of homeless, abused and neglected animals by rescuing, sheltering, rehabilitating and seeking forever families for these animals and educating the public on proper pet guardianship and the importance of spaying and neutering. HELP Humane Society sanctuaries the animals that are deemed unadoptable, by the public, either due to the animal’s physical or psychological circumstances.

#1 Shelter Buddies - Right now, our primary concern is Shelter Buddies. If we can get enough people to donate a total of $20,000 a month we could cover all of our expenses. I know it seems like a lot, but a couple of things contribute to these high costs... mainly vet care and the cost of renting our shelter.

We tried, and were very close (#6 nationally) at winning $250,000 in the Pepsi Refresh contest so that we could buy land and build a larger shelter. This would knock $3500 off of our monthly expenses and also reduce the amount we spend on utilities. As far as vet care goes, we do everything we can to reduce those expenses. Unlike some other shelters, we spay/neuter and give vaccinations to ALL of our animals as soon as they come through the doors of HELP. This is required so that they can enjoy a free roaming environment, rather than being kept in a cage. At another shelter they may wait until an animal is adopted before having them spayed/neutered and then part of the adoption fee goes towards covering that expense. We currently have over 100 cats at the shelter plus many others in foster homes. All of their vet care has been paid for through individual donations made to the shelter, the costs would then be recouped through the adoption fee.

Fairly often, we tend to take in the cases that others shy away from and more often than not those animals require expensive vet treatments. Situations like the 24 Abyssinians we rescued from a hoarder in 2008; Desiree, who was pulled from Independence AC and had to have both of her eyes removed; or Neosho, who when brought to us was so anemic from being eating alive by whip/hook worms and fleas, he had to be rushed to the ER for a blood transfusion. HELP is not the kind of group that can look at these poor animals faces and tell them "No".

We did also discover a link of companies that will match employee donations so we are hoping to point this out to people who may already be Shelter Buddies.

#2 Adoptions- Of course if we were able to adopt animals out more quickly that would help us bring in money to cover the animals expenses. Some months we will have 20 adoptions, other months we will have only a couple, it really varies. The shelter has been located on Main Street in Belton since 2005, however we are constantly hearing about people who even live in Belton and are not aware we are there. Main Street is not a heavily traveled street anymore and even though there are many merchants and monthly car shows, it is tough to make people realize we have animals available for adoption. Often they will travel miles to other shelters to look for their new family member. We have tried several ways of combating that. Aside from using Facebook, hosting many fundraisers, adopting our animals at the Belton Petsmart, HELP also at one time had a billboard on 71 highway to advertise. We have also recently gotten some local press with a couple of our events and our shelter makeover (RED Day from Keller Williams), but still we cannot seem to become more of a household name.

#3 Help with our annual Black Tail Affair- This will be the 4th year for our Black Tail Affair which is a formal dinner with a silent/live auction and dancing. Bryan Busby is our MC and this year we will feature Tanna Guthrie as our auctioneer. For the past few years we have had a DJ, but his equipment was damaged in a flood and we are looking into hiring a band this year. (In talks with GUS who also played at our Rock the Paw event in May) We are also now needing a photographer with indoor lighting equipment for the event, as the people who have donated time in years past are not able to help this year.

Finally one of the biggest things we need for the BTA is auction items. We are looking for individuals/businesses to donate items as well as volunteers to contact potential donors. We have a few things so far, but this event normally raises almost $20,000 and we really need that money to buy ourselves an extra month to obtain Shelter Buddies.

Rest in Peace Sweet Patton, the Miniature Schnauzer - Coping with the Loss of a Pet - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

My heart broke when I learned our dear friend's Schnauzer, Patton, had passed away last night from old age. He held on until his Daddy came home and was talking & laying with him. Patton gently passed over to the rainbow bridge during this time. It amazes me how strong our pets are, even until the very end. They want so badly never to abandon us, but they want to ensure we have comfort when that time comes and will not let go until they feel they have properly said goodbye.

Patton was 17 years old and lived such a long and happy life. When we were first introduced to Patton, we were intrigued by the Schnauzer breed and characteristics. We later decided to finally make the plunge into puppy parenthood and only chose a Schnauzer because of how much we enjoyed Patton and began to research the breed. Patton (Patty) was a precious, sweet little boy who was as spoiled as every dog should hope to be and always made us smile. We thank you Patty because you are the reason we found such joy with our Remington. You will be greatly missed and we love you.

To have loved and then said farewell, is better than to have never loved at all. For all of the times that you have stooped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treat and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you. For the care that you gave to me so unselfishly. For all of these things I am grateful and thankful.

I ask that you not grieve for the loss, but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each others lives. My life was fuller because you were there, not as a master/owner, but as my FRIEND.

Today I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among the flowers and the Sun shines gently down upon all of God's creatures. I can run, jump, play and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching joints and no regrets and no aging.

We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know that togetherness is forever. You live in our hearts as we do in yours. Companions such as you are so rare and unique. Don't hold the love that you have within yourself. Give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are.

Some random facts about me: I adore photography. I would be lost without my supporters in the world of Facebook. My handsome Miniature Schnauzer, Remington, howls duets with my adorable husband. I am only 5 feet tall and may stand on objects or use my 6'5" tall husband as a ladder for the perfect shot. You probably won't ever find me without a camera nearby. I photograph adoptable dogs in as high as 100+ degree heat or negative 10 degree cold. There is no stopping my persistence. My passion is being a voice for the voiceless. I advocate for Pit Bulls. I am up for any challenge you may think your pet will be for me. Trust me when I tell you that I have seen it all!

I studied Journalism and graduated from the University of Central Missouri in 2003. I always assumed I would be a reporter or a writer.... that's all I had ever known my entire life. Little did I realize, my photography career would begin when I discovered a love for photo restoration in 2005. I found joy in repairing memories that appeared beyond hope at first glance. Then one day I had an epiphany and expanded to offer photography services in 2009, quickly learning pet photography is my ultimate passion.

My heart is especially happy when I am documenting the innocent spirit, unconditional love and unique personalities of our furry creatures. I have been an animal lover my entire life, growing up with Lhasa Apsos throughout my childhood. Have you ever seen those terribly sad commercials on TV? You know, the ones with the heartbreaking faces of abandoned animals stuck behind shelter bars. There is that melancholy song in the background, sure to bring tears to any animal lover. When seeing those commercials, what do you do? Immediately change the channel before it's even through? Become overwhelmed with hopeless thoughts? Wonder how one person can really make a difference in this overall problem of animal abuse, neglect and overpopulation? Even if you can't donate monetary amounts to help shelters and rescues, there are many other ways that animal lovers can make a difference. Social networking by cross-posting lost and adoptable pets, donating old toys and beds that your pets no longer need and simply being a voice for homeless animals are just a few ways you can help without necessarily spending funds you may not have to spare.

Ways to Help Animals in Your Community

Learn how to report animal cruelty. One of the best things you can do to help animals in your community is to keep a list of people, including a humane law enforcement officer, a teacher or your veterinarian, who can help you report animal cruelty. Every state is different. In some areas, the police department investigates animal cruelty; in others, that job falls to local animal control or another municipal agency.

Start a neighborhood watch program. Get to know the animals in your neighborhood and invite your friends and neighbors to do the same. Together you can keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviors—abuse and neglect of companion animals, the mistreatment of local wildlife, dogs left in hot cars, etc.

Volunteer at your local shelter or animal rescue organization. Volunteering at your local shelter is a great way to make a difference in the lives of many animals. From walking dogs and organizing fundraising events to fostering abused or frightened animals, shelters across the country are in desperate need of volunteers.

Become an animal activist. Call or write your local law enforcement officials. Let them know that animal cruelty is a crime and investigating these cases should be a priority.

Help your neighbors help their animals. Companion animals play significant roles in the lives of the people who love them—but sometimes the elderly or ill have trouble providing essential pet care. If you see a neighbor in need, offer to assist—walk his dog, help with feeding, clean litter boxes, groom animals, pick up pet food and other supplies, drive him to the veterinarian, etc.

Start a pet food bank. See if there is a pet food pantry in your area and volunteer your time to help distribute the much-needed pet food. If there isn’t, consider starting one up. Host pet food drives, similar to canned food drives, in central locations of your community such as shopping centers and schools.

Promote spaying and neutering. Millions of adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters every year. By spaying and neutering your animals, you’ll make sure you are not contributing to the problem. You can also take this a step further by developing a spay/neuter outreach program in your community. Create flyers promoting the organizations that offer discounts in your area and pass them out at central locations in your community.

Write or start a newsletter! It’s a great way to keep members, supporters, adopters and the public informed about what the shelter does and what it needs. Many shelters rely on volunteers to write articles, and some newsletters are produced entirely by volunteers. If you’re not so verbally inclined, you might prefer the designing and publishing end of it, or work on creating or updating the mailing list. Be sure to include heartwarming stories and a donation envelope!

Throw a Party! Organize an event for all your friends, and donate the proceeds to the shelter. Any kind of social event—a clam bake, a Super Bowl party, a jazz brunch or a dog walk—is a great way to make new friends and raise money. Each year, as the word gets out, more people are bound to attend, and before you know it, your group will have a major fund-raising event.

I admit I was a little intimidated when I photographed my first deaf dog and my first blind dog. But, photographing a dog who was both deaf and blind seemed like a near impossible challenge. I mean, I certainly couldn't use my crazy noises and they wouldn't even be able to see me jumping up and down and throwing random things in the air to get their attention either. However, I realized that their sense of smell and touch would most likely be heightened and I utilized those aspects during my recent photo shoot. My latest challenge was DD, the 17 year old Cairn Terrier who is deaf and blind. My dear friend Jen was doggy sitting for her parents and I just happened to be coming over for a visit... and for those that know me well, they can tell you I really am never "off the clock" if I see an opportunity arise for pet photos.

My friend thought I must have altered or edited DD's eyes in this below photo, because she said DD looked like she did a few years ago before she lost her eyesight. I know I am "FixYourImages" for a reason, but I honestly did not edit her eyes. I have to give credit to the beautiful natural sunshine and the Lord of course, who guides me through life and these pet photo shoots.

Q: I just found out that my dog is going to be blind and lose her hearing within two years. She is a very active dog, but I can already see the differences in her behavior because the problems have already started. Is her life worth living after losing these senses?

A: Helen Keller would say yes, life is worth living even with blindness and deafness. Dogs who lose some senses will compensate with their others. She will still have smell to recognize the people she loves and touch to enjoy a good petting. She will still have taste to enjoy a good meal. And with your guidance, she can still enjoy a good run on a relatively even surface on a leash. Depending on the cause of blindness or deafness, often conditions will leave some ability to see shadows and navigate around things, but even if this is not the case, as long as the furniture doesn't move, they usually navigate quite well.

I think the hardest part of living with a dog losing senses is when we see them struggling or bumping into things. I have experienced this with my own dog Einstein, who at 18 years of age has lost most of his hearing and vision, but no one could look at him and say he is not still enjoying life. Remember, as Cesar says, a dog does not intellectualize. She just accepts and enjoys what the world gives her!

KC ponders asking voters to pay for a new animal shelter

Kansas City’s homeless dogs and cats recently spent a week in temporary holding pens at Hale Arena while the city’s animal shelter underwent a thorough cleaning.

But animal advocates and city leaders say the aging shelter at 4400 Raytown Road needs much more than a good scrubbing. In fact, they say it should, quite literally, be scrubbed once and for all.

As a result, city voters could decide later this year on a measure to replace the deteriorating structure built in 1973 as a doggie death row. Plans call for spending about $10 million on a much more hospitable facility designed for modern-day animal care and adoptions.

“For a city this size, we are way behind,” said former City Councilwoman Teresa Loar, who leads a citizens’ advisory committee on animal health and public safety. “It’s an embarrassment. Plus it’s just not humane.”

John Sharp, who heads the City Council’s public safety committee, is joining Loar in pushing for a November election on a bond issue that would include a new shelter.

“You can’t have a good animal control program without a decent shelter,” Sharp said. “The present shelter is totally inadequate in size and layout.”

The Missouri Department of Agriculture agrees.

“The city should seriously consider the option of improving and/or replacing the current animal shelter,” state animal health officer Tracy Houston wrote in a May 6 inspection report. “This facility falls short of other animal shelters in communities of similar size.”

The state report cited numerous health threats and deficiencies with the current facility. The city has until Aug. 5 to make specific repairs.

City Manager Troy Schulte said an election is likely, either this fall or early next year.

“The animal shelter is on its last legs, and it was never designed for the animal population, the animal care needs, so we’ve got to do something relatively quickly,” he said.

The City Council would have to act by late August to get a measure on the November ballot. It could be paired with other ballot questions, such as bonds for the city’s massive sewer overhaul and an extension of a vehicle license fee for community centers.

A 2010 feasibility study by El Dorado Architects estimated the shelter construction cost at close to $10 million. Schulte said the city should also establish a maintenance endowment of $2 million to $3 million.

Funding possibilities include general obligation bonds, to be paid back with a property tax increase, but general obligation bonds probably could not be used for maintenance. Or the city could do a quarter-cent sales tax increase for a year to raise both construction and maintenance money.

But some people question whether now is a good time to propose any type of tax increase, or whether it’s worth it to spend so much money on animals.

Schulte acknowledges the difficulty, but adds, “There’s a passionate group of advocates out there. We would rely on them to help us get the message across about the need.”

Schulte notes that a lot has changed with animal shelters in 40 years, along with expectations for pet care.

Indeed, the Jackson County Legislature has just approved a contract to spend $5 million to build a new shelter in Independence.

“For everyone who says we shouldn’t be spending the money, I’ll get 1,000 emails saying you’re not being nearly compassionate enough on animal care,” Schulte said.

The shelter was built in 1973 with a crematorium attached. At that time it would hold stray animals for five days or until their owners retrieved them, or try for a few more days to adopt them out and then euthanize those left behind.

“It doesn’t have isolation wards to deal with illnesses that crop up because the animals weren’t there long enough to get sick,” said Neighborhood and Community Services Director David Park.

The shelter was renovated 10 years ago, but City Architect Eric Bosch said that even then he recognized the need for a new facility.

The 2010 study by El Dorado Architects recommended a new shelter with separate areas for adoptions, isolation and quarantine holding rooms for both dogs and cats with infectious diseases, treatment rooms and areas for longer holds.

The discussion about a new shelter comes even as the city seeks a new private operator for its current facility.

For the past two years, until April 30, veterinarian R. Wayne Steckelberg ran the shelter for the city. Steckelberg made cosmetic improvements, such as new paint and the addition of large dog runs and “hug rooms” for adoptive families to bond with pets. He reduced the euthanasia rate and increased adoptions.

But allegations surfaced earlier this year about animal mistreatment and severe illnesses. Steckelberg staunchly denied the abuse allegations and said the illnesses were a result of the antiquated ventilation and plumbing systems that allowed viruses to fester.

The city is asking private operators to submit proposals by July 7.

Even if voters approve funds for a new shelter, completion is likely two to three years away. A possible site would be on city-owned land near the existing city tow lot at 7750 E. Front St. However, that land might be needed for future water department improvements, so any shelter location is still highly speculative.

Along with Sharp, council members Ed Ford and Scott Wagner say the city needs to pursue a new shelter soon, although they remain flexible on timing of an election.

Mayor Sly James said he has not yet decided on whether or when to present a ballot measure to voters.

“I know there is a need,” James said. “I know people feel strongly about it.”

Loar said that, ideally, the city will build the shelter and identify an excellent nonprofit to run it. But she said the city has to lead the charge.

“I want it on in November,” she said, “And I’m going to really push for that.”

Breed Specific Legislation BSL - The Truth about Pit Bulls & Bully Breeds - Adopt a Pit Bull - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

BSL or Breed Specific Legislation... just plain stinks in my opinion. Various cities can implement BSL to ban or restrict certain types of dogs based on their appearance because they are perceived as “dangerous” breeds or types of dogs. BSL is almost always associated with Pit Bulls or Pit Bull mixes.

I know there are probably people reading this who have been blinded and brain washed by how the media negatively portrays Pit Bulls. I admit it, I was one of those people. When I was younger, I was scared of Pit Bulls. *Gasp*. I know..... me.... animal advocate and bully breed promoter to the highest extreme....... used to be just like the vast majority of uninformed people who heard the words "Pit Bull" and immediately pictured a menacing, terribly violent breed, ripping someone to shreds by their magical "locking jaws".

Lucky for me, I began volunteering at animal shelters and entered into the rescue world, where I encounter Pit Bulls on a regular basis and finally saw the truth behind the false stereotype that surrounds this breed. I have learned through proper education and first hand experience, that the Pit Bull is not only the most obedient dog I have ever photographed, but one of the most loyal and intelligent breeds I have ever met. I can tell you I have never met a Pit Bull who did not immediately listen and obey my basic commands and cooperate with anything I asked of them during a photo shoot. I usually breathe a sigh of relief when I hear the breed I am expected to photograph is a Pit Bull.

Rosie has an extremely sad story. She was found laying in a field in the middle of Winter and was traced back to a rescue in Iowa. The rescue in Iowa said they now have BSL set into place and could not take her back. So, somewhere along the way, Rosie was brought to KC PAWS since they are a rescue and house dogs in a no-kill facility. However, it has recently been brought to their attention that if Rosie is not adopted in 2 weeks, she will be taken to animal control and will most likely be euthanized because of her breed. Now, you can see why I mentioned earlier that BSL just plain stinks.

KC PAWS is unable to keep her at their location because they already have many long-term dogs currently, that are not likely to be adopted ever... or atleast for many years. Adding one more long-term dog will eventually effect how many dogs can further be rescued and adopted out. However, Rosie is very special and being taken away to animal control for a death sentence is just unacceptable. So, if there is a rescue out there who can handle adding a sweet Pit Bull to their group, please contact KC PAWS. Last weekend I had the pleasure of photographing my dear friend Casey, her new baby and of course her furry baby Dizzle the Miniature Pinscher. I don't normally photograph babies or children, as I learned quite quickly that I have an extreme & uncanny amount of patience with dogs and cats, but absolutely none with children. Perhaps that is why I do not have any kids yet! No, but seriously, kids are great, but their moods are very unpredictable. And my normal "doo doo doo" high pitched noises and dog treats is certainly not going to work to my advantage with a human! Luckily, my husband is quite good with children and can make the silliest faces in the world that always crack a smile. He was around on this day to help me out a bit! He even let me sit on his shoulders to get some better angles. I mean, come on, being 5 feet tall does have some disadvantages, but when your hubby is 6'5, it comes in handy!

Now with all of the above mentioned, please know I will make exceptions and photograph kids and babies if there is a pet involved somehow in the photo shoot. I have tried to stay true to my genre and speciality, which is natural light and pets, so if a pet is incorporated, then I am up for the challenge!

Following Your Dreams & My Journey as a Pet Photographer & Rescue Volunteer - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

When I ask myself where my love for animals came from, I always think of Galahad. I grew up with this very special Lhasa Apso for the first 15 years of my life. He was around a couple years before I was even born and once I came into the world, he never left my side. When I was very young, he could be found underneath my play swing, making sure my bathtime went smoothly or hanging onto my underpants with his teeth while I laughed hysterically running around the house. Because of him, I know my love of animals began and has been in my heart ever since. The day he had to be put to sleep was one of the hardest days of my life. I was only 15, but I remember very clearly asking my parents for a moment alone with him in their bedroom. I told him how much he meant to me, said goodbye and sobbed uncontrollably. For the first time, I had experienced the deep and painful loss of a furry companion and it was devastating.

I always had a love for writing as I was growing up and I wrote short stories about various topics, but mainly about animals and about Galahad. A couple stories I wrote about him were published in small magazines and I even won the coveted Junior Writer Award by the Dog Writers Association of America when I was only 16. But, don't get me wrong. I submitted my stories to hundreds of magazines and was rejected hundreds of times. This is when I learned to be extremely persistent and refused to give up.

So it would only make sense that I studied journalism when I entered college, right? I went to the University of Central Missouri and graduated in 2003 with a degree in Journalism. Writing was all I had ever known... it was my comfort zone... my safety net and what I thought I was meant to be doing in life. I was an editor and graphic designer when I landed my first job in the "real world". This company paid for continuing education classes and this is where I learned about the exciting world of Photoshop and photo restoration. I started my own website with the encouragement of my instructor and began restoring photos for family and friends and eventually paying clients.

Now, what I am going to describe next might not make sense to some people, but here I go. One day I was sitting at my computer like I always did, but I was looking through some candid photos of my parent's new dog I had taken with a silly little point and shoot camera. I am being 100% honest when I tell you that something spoke to me internally that day. Something planted the idea of pet photography in my head. Something whispered gently that I should expand my restoration website to offer photography services and I should specialize in pet photography. Now, being that I am a Christian and a spiritual person, I fully believe that this "something" was the Lord and He was leading me to be a pet photographer and thus to save animal's lives by eventually photographing in shelters and rescues.

I had ignored a heavy pulling at my heart for quite some time. I had wanted to volunteer at animal shelters ever since I was a little girl. I had a deep love of animals and wanted to somehow make a difference in their lives. However, I never thought I had the strength to witness the horrific truth of animal cruelty and the reality of homeless animals. Many years had passed, but deep down I always felt a terrible nagging that I should be volunteering with animals. In 2009, thanks to social networking, I learned quite quickly via Facebook how many photos could be improved that were posted on shelter and rescue pages. Most of the dogs looked completely terrified and had the awful "glow eye" from using a flash. Who would want to adopt a dog with a photo that portrayed them this way? I had already bought my first professional DSLR camera and I contacted Animal Haven and asked if they could use some assistance with their photos. They welcomed me down to help, although I was completely scared of what I would see when I entered a shelter environment for the first time. I prepared myself for the worst. I remember vividly walking down the halls of cages... barking.... emptiness.... longing eyes..... extreme sadness.... yes, it was just as I had imagined. But once I started meeting the dogs, becoming their friend and earning their trust, I came alive when I began photographing them. Even on the first day I volunteered, I felt like I was supposed to be doing this my whole life. I learned to overlook my feelings of sadness and pity, but instead focused on the hope of helping find them a forever family and wondered silently if a photo really could change the life of a homeless dog.

Well it's now 2011. I have been volunteering and photographing adoptable dogs for almost 2 years and I can tell you that a photograph CAN change the life of a homeless dog. While the real heroes are the volunteers who dedicate countless hours to caring for and physically rescuing these dogs from the streets, I do feel I am an important piece in the puzzle to helping a homeless dog find its forever family. I have received more support from my Facebook fan base than I could have ever imagined in my wildest dreams. Every day I find myself advocating even more for the overwhelming amount of lost souls out there. A life in the rescue community is filled with happiness, heartache, anger and exhaustion, but it is worth every moment of it. I encourage you all to look deep inside yourself and to follow your dreams and your passion, regardless of how silly it may seem and even if you are rejected hundreds of times, just as I was while growing up. Life is what you make it. And everyone can truly find their calling in life if you put forth the effort and listen very closely to your heart.

Thank you Mom and Dad for having a dog and for teaching me the unconditional love of a pet. And thank you Galahad for being my first furry inspiration and helping lead me to where I am today.

Rest in Peace Sweet Eddie - Coping with the Loss of a Pet - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

Erica, owner of Pawz at Play doggy daycare, lost her sweet black lab Eddie. He had such a strong personality and even recovered from a torn ACL which was debilitating for quite some time. Eddie was recently rushed to the emergency vet for vomiting and it was discovered that he either had severe bloat or an unknown tumor had ruptured inside him. He was in excruciating pain and there was not much time to say goodbye. I know how devastating this loss must feel. I only met Eddie during his photo shoot, but it was very evident how much he was loved and what a beautiful, shining soul he had.

Your Pets In Heaven

To have loved and then said farewell, is better than to have never loved at all. For all of the times that you have stooped and touched my head, fed me my favorite treat and returned the love that I so unconditionally gave to you. For the care that you gave to me so unselfishly. For all of these things I am grateful and thankful.

I ask that you not grieve for the loss, but rejoice in the fact that we lived, loved and touched each others lives. My life was fuller because you were there, not as a master/owner, but as my FRIEND.

Today I am as I was in my youth. The grass is always green, butterflies flit among the flowers and the Sun shines gently down upon all of God's creatures. I can run, jump, play and do all of the things that I did in my youth. There is no sickness, no aching joints and no regrets and no aging.

We await the arrival of our lifelong companions and know that togetherness is forever. You live in our hearts as we do in yours. Companions such as you are so rare and unique. Don't hold the love that you have within yourself. Give it to another like me and then I will live forever. For love never really dies, and you are loved and missed as surely as we are.

FAQ - Shelter & Rescue Pet Photography Tips & Advice - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography - Jennifer Hague, Pet Photographer

Q. I am interested in helping the local humane society improve the photos they take of the adoptable dogs. Any tips you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
A. I do realize that the volunteers at shelter and rescue organizations may not have the equipment or the time to take the best photos of the many dogs they intake. One of the keys to the difference in quality of photos is having some time to spend with each dog and not rush the process. I don't care if I have a million other things to do on the night I photograph at a shelter/rescue... I will take many, many, and I mean MANY photos of one dog if necessary to get the perfect shot. I am extremely picky, persistent and patient which are the three imperative "P's" to have in this field. If you are frustrated easily, then I wouldn't recommend photographing dogs in a shelter or rescue environment. You have to be prepared for the most hyper kind of dog who could really care less that you have a camera and need them to sit still. Most of these dogs have been sitting in a cage for hours... do you really think the first thing they want to do is SIT STILL when they are let out to come see you? With that said, here are some important things to remember:

Ensure the dog feels comfortable with you. Immediately pet them, sit down with them by getting on their level and talk to them. If you feel silly doing these things, then photographing pets is probably not for you.
Take a moment to learn about each dog. What motivates them? Do they like squeaky toys or balls? What gets them excited? Do they react to silly noises? Are they food motivated? Every dog is different and you just have to reach out to them individually and figure out what makes them happy so you can capture it on film
Bring a helper with you. I always have another volunteer with me who handles the dogs, holds them on a leash and helps me get them to follow basic commands. It really takes two people to accomplish the goal of a perfect photo in this type of an environment.
Place the dog in a shady, grassy spot if possible. I like to use grass as a background because it's the most natural and is a good contrast with most dog's coloring. I also use a spot at KC PAWS with a nice blue metal wall as a background, so the color pops. If you are in a shelter environment, get them away from cages, chain link fences and other menacing backgrounds. We want the dogs personality to shine through, not the fact they may be depressed and in a caged environment every day.

Q. How on earth do you get active dogs to sit so still?
A. One important part of this is having a good camera. By a good camera, I mean a DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera which is capable of having an extremely fast shutter speed and can capture a split second when you might need it most. For example, my Nikon can capture 7 frames per second. That means even if my subject doesn't appear to be perfectly posing, my camera might just be fast enough to capture it. Especially in a rescue environment, I make sure I never rush the photo process and take time to pet and talk to each dog and ensure they are comfortable with me. I do feel I have a special connection with dogs and this helps greatly. Dogs can sense someone with a good heart and I feel the ones in a rescue and shelter environment must realize in some way that I am trying to help them find a new home. I have read that dogs communicate through telepathy or by sending "mental pictures", so I can only assume that whatever I am picturing in my head (feelings of hope, finding them a new family) they must sense in one way or another and cooperate with my antics.

Q. Do you have any tips for photographing black dogs? They are often hard to do!
A. Photographing black dogs can be extremely difficult, because usually their eyes get lost in the rest of the fur and the end result can be a very dark photo without any clear focused area. To help prevent this problem, I always place dogs in a shady spot, which may sound contradicting to those who think you need bright sunlight. If the sun must be in the photo, it needs to be behind the dog, not in front of the dog. This goes for any color of dog really. And I never shoot with a background setup. I use only natural light and refuse to ever use a flash. If the photos still turn out too dark, I will edit them in post processing using Photoshop, by lightening certain key areas of the photo.

Q. Why do you not watermark or copyright your photos of adoptable dogs?
A. While most professional photographers watermark and copyright every one of their photos, including the ones of adoptable dogs, I chose to take a different approach. Since I began photographing adoptable dogs in 2009, I specifically chose not to watermark those photos (putting my logo and business name on the photo) because I want these dogs shared far and wide and I felt putting my logo on them would be distracting and take away from the ultimate goal which is finding the dog a forever family. Of course I appreciate a photo credit for my hard work, but I also want it to be very evident to everyone that I am only interested in the dog's best interest and not plastering my logo on those photos to promote myself in any way.

Q. Are there any online sites or books that you have found really helpful?
A. As many of you know, I self taught myself everything regarding photography. Yes, I took classes to learn and improve my photo restoration skills, but when it came to handling a camera... I bought a DSLR camera, read lots of books and followed many well-known photographer's blogs to learn what I have. I recommend Photo Biz which is an online community of photographers who share all kinds of tips and tricks. Two of my most inspirational photographers to follow are Melissa Jill (based out of Arizona) and Jasmine Star (based out of California). Yes, they are both wedding photographers, not pet photographers, but that really doesn't effect their advice on a general level. They are absolutely amazing, inspiring and completely open and honest about everything in their life. They also provide FAQ posts to their faithful readers and I think every aspiring photographer can learn a lot from these talented women.

Q. So, if you self taught yourself everything photography-related, what did you study in school?
A. I have a Bachelor's degree in Journalism and graduated from the University of Central Missouri in 2003. This may give you a better explanation of why I enjoy blogging and writing so much. I have a passion for writing, but somewhere along the way, I listened really closely to my heart and it led me to volunteer at animal rescue organizations and teach myself about photography, long after I was out of school. Do you have a pet who is chronically ill? Even if the answer is no, have you ever let the horrific thought of losing your pet cross your mind? Most pet owners assume their furry children will have a typical lifespan correlating with its particular breed and size. However, we don't plan on something tragic occurring, such as being hit by a car, running away or being diagnosed with incurable diseases such as canine lymphoma or other types of cancer. Unfortunately, in my journey as a pet photographer, I have learned many people do not realize the importance of capturing their furry child (professionally) on camera until it's too late. Or they wait until their pet is too sick or increasingly aged and wouldn't want them documented in such a weak physical condition. I recently was given the honor to photograph TJ's boxer, Sugar Ray, on his last day on earth before he crossed the rainbow bridge. TJ and his sister Stacy have written some touching words about their experience and I hope you will read these heartfelt stories and reflect on your own pet and their life. Losing your pet is not easy, especially when you are out of the country and have been away from your pet for 4 months. When I got word that Sugar Ray had lymphoma, I immediately prepared myself for the toughest decision you have to make about your pet. Do you spend a lot of money and keep them alive, or do you listen to your pet´s heart and soul and let them go? I chose to let him go as his cancer was in a severe stage & he didn't deserve to suffer. My family, caring for Sugar Ray while I was away, was devastated, as he was my furry kid in the USA. He had my spirit and was a good protector and companion to my parents and family while I was gone. When I decided to put him down, my sister arranged an emergency meeting with Jennifer and the photos she took made me realize I was doing the right thing. She captured his spirit that night before we put him to sleep and I cannot thank her enough for the effort she put forth. If you love your pets as much as I loved Sugar Ray, you need to use her services, because as I learned, you never know what might take place. I am in debt to her for helping me cope with the loss of my best friend and loyal companion, Sugar Ray - and am very grateful for her generosity, her time, & going above and beyond for me and my dog. I found Jennifer Hague thanks to social networking, and just in time. My brother's dog Sugar Ray had just been diagnosed with lymphoma and it was a very late, severe stage. My brother works and lives in Mexico and had to leave his best friend & loyal companion of almost 9 years behind in the USA with our parents, until he could come back for him in a few months. After hearing of Sugar Ray's diagnosis and speaking to the vet, my brother made the painful decision to put him down. It was recommended the sooner the better due to how sick Sugar Ray was. He didn't deserve to suffer- not Sugar Ray. My brother asked us to put him to sleep on Saturday & he would Skype with us to tell Sugar Ray goodbye on Thursday night. Friday at work, I was on Facebook & immediately thought of Jennifer and sent her an "emergency" email asking if she had about an hour to capture Sugar Ray. I knew it was a long shot, but I received an immediate response. I was amazed at her prompt response & willingness to help me.

Sugar Ray was very sick, but had been on a medication for a few days that seemed to make him feel a little better, so when we got to the winery, he was in rare form and got to run free through the vineyards, and his spirit shined. Jennifer went above and beyond, not only for us, but for Sugar Ray, who was able to run free and be himself as we all knew him on his final day with us. We want to praise Jennifer and her talent & skill as a photographer, and her special way with pets. My brother will now have Sugar Ray's spirit forever captured. We are so thankful for Jennifer and her husband, Dan, who also gave up his time that evening & assisted Jennifer with the session - her generosity, talent, and professionalism we will be forever grateful for. Sugar Ray will never be forgotten and will live on in our hearts forever. If you have a pet, or not, you should make it a point to contact Jennifer. She is truly a blessing to all who meet her. You’ve seen that ASPCA commercial. You know, the one with Sarah McLachlan singing “Angel” in the background while abused and abandoned animals flash across the screen.

I wince when it comes on. It’s torturous. Yes, it makes me want to donate. But I’ve never made it through a commercial long enough to want to take one of those beautiful fur babies home.

Those images tell us sad truths, but they don’t do those pets justice. We see them shaky and bewildered, but they are more than that. That’s the bad rap that shelter animals get. They become their pasts.

But what if those pets had portraits, beautifully shot pictures that really capture their spirits?

Enter Jennifer Hague. An Olathe graphic designer and communications specialist by day and a pet photographer every chance she gets.

For years, she has seen friends post pictures of adorable pets looking for a forever home on Facebook.

But there was always something that bothered her — the robo eyes thanks to the flash, hands holding the dog still, leashes coming from nowhere. No one can blame the shelters. They are running on limited resources and dealing with constant intake.

So Jennifer started volunteering her services. She was no pro, either. It was two years ago; she’d just gotten a schnauzer, Remmy, and bought a starter camera. She figured with her photo restoration skills, love for photography and dogs, she could make a difference.

She started doing portraits of the pets at Animal Haven and soon realized it was hard helping out.

“It was difficult seeing how many animals are dumped and neglected and abused.” says Hague, 29.

It was the heartbreak of shelter living that had kept Hague from volunteering sooner. Ever since she was a child, she has wanted to work with animals, but she knew she didn’t have the strength.

Somehow, she found it. Jennifer has helped 100 dogs get homes. She has learned her way around the camera.

Treats, love and squeaky sounds are her secret weapons. She does all she can to become the dog’s new best friend.

Every other week she shoots for KC Paws. And her work ( www.fixyourimages.com) in the local shelter community has brought her paying gigs and a bit of notoriety. Her portraits have been featured in a variety of pet magazines — Fido Friendly, Dog Fancy, Bella Dog and the like. But she says it’s not about that.

“I just felt led to do this,” she says of her work. “No longer was I going to be discouraged because it’s sad. Instead, I’ve learned to focus on the hope of finding dogs forever homes.”

Through her portraits, you don’t just see what an animal has been through. You see where it can go.

Rocky the Miniature Schnauzer & Black Dog Syndrome - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

Two important things to note from my recent client photo shoot:

1. Rocky is an adorable miniature schnauzer!! And we all know, being an owner of the most spoiled miniature schnauzer EVER, this breed totally melts my heart!!

2. Rocky is a black dog. Did you know black dogs are one of the most overlooked dog in rescues and shelters? It's called Black Dog Syndrome and yes, it's real. Some people believe perhaps it's a superstitious thing or just the fact that dogs this color happen to blend in with the cages because of the poor lighting conditions in shelters. Regardless of the reason, please spread awareness and help black dogs become more noticed and adopted!!

Some of my favorites from the session include Rocky who modeled (hesitantly) on this rock with the small pond in the background. Notice I said hesitantly, because most miniature schnauzers are not a fan of the water!

This was what Rocky thought of having to model on this hard, uncomfortable rock. The things a dog will let me do for a great photo!

Rest in Peace Sweet Sugar Ray - Saying Goodbye to Your Pet - Kansas City Dog & Pet Photography

I received an e-mail on Friday, May 13, with the subject line "Emergency Photo Shoot". I knew this couldn't be good news. A sweet woman named Stacy had found me online and was desperately needing photos taken of her brother's boxer. Sugar Ray was 8 years old and diagnosed with a very late stage Canine Lymphoma and was very ill. He was scheduled to be put to sleep the next day.

Lymphoma is one of the most common cancers seen in dogs. Although there are breeds that appear to be at increased risk for this disease, lymphoma can affect any dog of any breed at any age. It accounts for 10-20% of all cancers in dogs. Lymphoma is a malignant cancer that involves the lymphoid system. In a healthy animal, the lymphoid system is an important part of the body's immune system defense against infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria. Stacey's brother was in Mexico on business and could not make it back to the States, however when he heard the diagnosis, he did not want his precious furry son to be in pain any longer. Choosing when to let your pet go is one of the hardest decisions anyone will ever have to make. I can't imagine having to make that kind of decision from across the country and not being able to tell my pet goodbye. But it was quite obvious that Sugar Ray's daddy loved him so much, he made the heartbreaking and selfless choice to free Sugar Ray from his pain.

When I am contacted with a situation like this, my love of animals overpowers everything. I had plans that night, but nothing was more important than documenting this sweet boy. My husband and I met their family at Stone Pillar Winery and Sugar Ray was able to run free around the vineyards with a radiance and happiness surrounding him. I would have never known he was sick. I am confident that Sugar Ray knew his time on earth was ending and looked deep inside himself to find strength and wanted to shine for us all to preserve his warm, loving spirit.

What do you get when you combine a Chow Chow puppy, a Miniature Schnauzer and two Carlin Pinschers? Quite the exciting playdate! I have decided to feature each breed below to help others learn more about their characteristics.

ABOUT THE CHOW CHOW
The Chow Chow is a large, stocky dog. The two most distinctive features of the Chow Chow are its blue-black tongue and its almost straight hind legs, which makes it walk rather stilted. The head is large and broad with a flat skull.

Temperament
The Chow Chow is a well-mannered dog. Quite good with children. If they get to know cats and other household animals when they are young, they will get along with them when they are adults. Should be thoroughly socialized preferably when they are young. They need firm authority and training starting at puppyhood. This is a very dominant breed who requires a dominant owner. The owner of this breed of dog should be a calm person who is naturally firm, confident, and consistent. With such a handler, the Chow Chow can develop well. The problems arise when the dog lives with owners who do not understand how to be, and stay in the alpha position. If you allow this dog to believe they are the boss of your house they will become stubborn, protective and sometimes down right unruly. Chow Chows who believe they are boss will often be a one-person dog, very loyal to their master, though he may act reserved, even with them. Alpha Chow Chows like to dominate other dogs. A Chow Chow who is not 100% convinced humans are the boss, will be harder to obedience train. When you have a Chow Chow who believes he is the ruler of humans and strangers push themselves on this dog, he may become aggressive, telling the humans he would like to have his space. Space means a lot to a dog. It is respect in the dog world.

Height, Weight
Height: 18-22 inches (46-56 cm.) Weight: 45-70 pounds (20-32 kg.)

Health Problems
They are prone to suffer eye irritation called entropion, caused by eyelid abnormality; this can be corrected with surgery. Also prone to hip dysplasia, stomach cancer, hot spots and ear infections. Because of their relatively short muzzles they often snore.

Exercise
Chow Chows can be lazy, but need to be taken for a daily walk. Dogs who do not get to go on daily walks are more likely to display a wide array of behavior problems.

Life Expectancy
About 15 years

Grooming
Regular brushings of the long coat is important to maintain the lifted, standing-out look. This breed is a seasonal heavy shedder and extra care is needed when the dog is shedding its dense undercoat. Dry shampoo when necessary.

Origin
The exact origin of the Chow Chow is unknown, but we do know that it is a very old breed. The oldest known dog fossils, dated back to several million years ago, are very similar in structure to the Chow Chow. Pictures on Chinese pottery which looked like the Chow Chow date back as far back as 206 BC. The Chow Chow may be related to the Chinese Shar-Pei, as both breeds origins point to China and both have the distinctive trait of the black and blue mouth. It may also have contributed to the ancestry of the Keeshond, Samoyed, Norwegian Elkhound, and the Pomeranian. The Chow Chow was used by the Chinese as a working dog doing many different tasks such as a hunter of wolves, sable and pheasant, for herding, cart and sled puller, boat guard, and protection of the home. The dogs served the Chinese much more then just as a working dog.

ABOUT THE CARLIN PINSCHER
For a developing breed, Carlin Pinschers are very similar in appearance. The Carlin Pinscher has no breathing problems due to the fact that they have some of the Miniature Pinscher's muzzle. The Pug has given them thicker legs and a stronger looking body. The coat is the same as the shorter, almost non-shedding coat of the Miniature Pinscher. The color that it is being bred for is black and tan.

Temperament
According to Isabeau, one of the Carlin Pinscher's original developers, "they are patient and pleasant like a Pug," although they still retain some, but not all of the Miniature Pinscher's terrier like behaviors. This is an even-tempered breed, exhibiting stability, playfulness, great charm, dignity, and an outgoing, loving disposition. Most puppies, raised with respectful children who know how to show the dog leadership, grow into respectful, gentle dogs. Obedience training and a firm pack leader is a must for all dogs, as an ill-behaved dog is more likely to harm a child due to lack of leadership. Make sure you are this dog's firm, confident, consistent pack leader to avoid Small Dog Syndrome, human induced behavior problems. Always remember, dogs are canines, not humans. Be sure to meet their natural instincts as animals.

Height: 11 to 13 inches (28-33 cm.) Weight: 12 to 14 pounds (5-6 kg.)

Exercise
These dogs do not require a lot of exercise but should be walked daily to fulfill their primal canine instinct to walk. In addition, they should be given regular opportunities to run and play. Make sure any yard in which they can run loose has a fence high enough to prevent their determined efforts to escape and explore.

About 15 or more years.

Grooming
The Carlin Pinscher's smooth, short-haired, hard coat is easy to groom. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush, and shampoo only when necessary. Loose hair can be remove by wiping over with a warm, damp washcloth. This breed is an average shedder.

Origin
Originally called the Pug-Pin, this breed began as a cross between the Miniature Pinscher and the Pug. Other breeds, thought to contribute to Carlin Pinscher type, have been, and are being introduced to the gene pool as well. The name Carlin comes from the Pug, as in some countries the Pug is known as the Carlin.

ABOUT THE MINIATURE SCHNAUZER
The Miniature Schnauzer is a small, sturdily built, little dog. The body is square in proportion. The strong head is rectangular in shape. The width of the head gets slightly smaller from the years to the eyes. The muzzle is strong and ends rather bluntly. The nose is black. The bite is scissors. The deep-set, small eyes are dark brown in color. Ears set high on the head are often cropped to a point. The Mini Schnauzer has a double coat. The outer coat is wiry and the undercoat is soft. The coat is clipped so it has a bushy beard, mustache and eyebrows.

Temperament
The Miniature Schnauzer is an intelligent, loving, happy dog. They are energetic, playful and get along well with children and like to be with their people. Affectionate, keen, devoted and docile. With proper leadership they can get along with other dogs. Socialize this breed well. They make good companions and family pets. The Mini Schnauzer will not listen if they sense they are stronger minded than their owner. Owners need to be calm, but firm, possessing a natural air of authority. They do not have a yappy bark, but rather sounds like a low, carried-out howl of a voice. This breed makes a good watchdog and vermin hunter. An easy dog to travel with. Some can be reserved with strangers if the humans do not provide stability in their lives, but most love everyone. Socialize them well.

Height: 12-14 inches (30-36cm.) Weight: 10-15 pounds (5-7kg)

Health Problems
Prone to liver disease, kidney stones, diabetes, skin disorders, von Willebrand's disease and cysts. Also hereditary eye problems. Gains weight easily, do not over feed.

Exercise
These energetic little dogs need daily, long, brisk, walks or jogs, and love play sessions off the leash. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as in a dog's mind the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. Dogs who do not get to go on daily walks are more likely to display behavior problems. Teach them to enter and exit door and gateways after the humans.

Life Expectancy
About 15 years. It shows no signs of age until quite late in life.

Grooming
The wiry coat is not hard to groom, although it does need attention. Comb and brush daily with a short wire brush to prevent matting. If any appear they should be cut out. They should be clipped all over to an even length twice a year, in spring and fall. Trim around the eyes and ears with blunt-nosed scissors and clean the whiskers after meals. On pet dogs the coat is usually clipped short on the upper body and left somewhat longer on the under-parts, legs and head. Show dogs need to be hand stripped and trimmed instead of clipping. This breed sheds little to no hair and is a good dog for allergy sufferers.

Origin
The Miniature Schnauzer is a German breed. During the years around the turn of the century, both smooth German Pinscher and coarse-haired Schnauzer pups appeared in the same litters. The German Pinscher Schnauzer Club initiated a policy requiring proof of three generations of pure coarse-haired Schnauzer coats for registration.
